Study In Sydney: New Scholarships For Indian Students

"India has produced leaders whose vision has changed the world." - Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sydney, Dr Michael Spence

For Indian students who aspire to study abroad, Australia now seems a more desirable option than long-favoured destinations like the US.

As highlighted by India Today, it is believed to be the wide range of courses offered at Australian universities, as well as the beneficial post-study work permit, the appeal of permanent residency and the country's affordability that attracts Indian students.

"According to the statistics provided by Rod Hilton, the deputy high commissioner of Australia in India, approximately 68,000 Indian students went to the Land Down Under in 2017, a 14 percent increase than the previous year.

"And by February 2018, 60,062 Indian students made their journey to Australia in their quest for higher education. Apart from the main cities like Melbourne and Sydney, they are also inclining towards new regions including Adelaide, Gold Coast, Perth and Northern Territory," the article summarises.

However, another leading advantage to this study destination's popularity among Indian students could also be the rise of new scholarship schemes.

University of Sydney's scholarship for India's next visionary leaders

One of the universities that has caught onto the demand for Australian higher education is the University of Sydney.

By offering Indian students the chance to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate study on-campus, outstanding performers from India will be eligible for these upcoming scholarships.

There are currently three proposed types of scholarships that will be awarded to students from India, and there are 28 up for grabs in total:
  • 3 x AU$50,000 scholarships for undergraduate students, paid over the duration of any undergraduate degree up to four years;
  • 10 x AU$20,000 first-year scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  • 15 x AU$10,000 first-year scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The scholarships listed above are specifically for Indian citizens (currently residing in India) applying for an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework degree at the University of Sydney.

But to keep the application process varied and exciting, the applicant criteria also contain a creative twist...

To be paired with your application form, the University of Sydney will ask you to share "one idea that will bring change to India".

This will need to be presented in the form of a short written essay (250-300 words) and then shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a two-minute video based on their vision.

After expressing personal aspirations and beliefs about India's future, scholarship winners will be chosen for both their exemplary academic portfolio and their real-world perspective - a fair and balanced way of choosing the 28 successful candidates.

So, if you're up for the challenge and want to pursue your degree in Australia, the scholarship application process will begin from April 1 and the last date to apply is May 30.

From all of us here at Study International, we wish you good luck on your scholarship application and your study abroad experience.
